starrlust: the all-consuming desire for something beautiful

STARRLUST IS A HORROR-COMEDY.

FRESH OUT OF THE CRYPT, VAMPIRE STARR IS HELL-BENT ON FITTING IN IN THE MODERN WORLD. HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY ALTERNATIVE ARTS + CULTURE, STARR CHRONICLES HER HOLLYWOOD JOURNEY THROUGH RITUALS LUSH WITH WITTY WORDPLAY AND SANGUINE IMAGERY. FIERCELY DETERMINED BUT DEEPLY CONFUSED, STARR TEETERS DANGEROUSLY ON THE EDGE OF PATHETIC AND DELICIOUSLY EVIL.

THIS IS THE SOUNDTRACK.

UH OH, BLUE HAIR AND PRONOUNS

STARRLUST: THEY/THEM

STARR: SHE/HER

KATSURA: SHE/THEY

Taking inspiration from generations of alternative subcultures, STARRLUST is singer-songwriter Katsura’s Gen-Z take on alternative music and culture. Spanning the spectrum of left-of-center pop, STARRLUST blends emo lyrics with indie-pop vocals, metalcore riffs, trap drums, new-wave synths, and pop-punk energy to craft a subset of emo-pop self-identified as “vampire pop”. Lyrics and storytelling are the foundation of STARRLUST, with the world primarily crafted around the poetry penned in Katsura’s notes app.

Although a newcomer on the scene, Katsura has been preparing for this for a very long time. A lifelong musician with a bachelor’s degree in Music History and Industry from UCLA, a certificate in Independent Artist from Musicians Institute, and currently working part-time at an indie label doing marketing and A&R, there is no shortage of musical knowledge behind STARRLUST.

IN THE ARTIST'S WORDS:

When I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be a rock starr. As long as I can remember, singing and performing has been my biggest dream. When I found Hannah Montanna, I was OBSESSED - I decided I wanted to be an actor too. My parents wouldn’t let me audition for child actor roles though which was probably for the best because that really fucks people up. Other than a performer, my other two biggest aspirations were to be a writer and a vampire. With STARRLUST, I get to be all of those things.

When I was in high school, I knew 3 things: I needed to do music, I needed to live in Los Angeles, and I had absolutely no clue at all what I was doing or who I was. I’ve struggled with pretty debilitating mental illness since I was 13, which I now know stemmed from masking my neurodivergence. Music and writing are what gave me purpose when I felt like I had nothing else. Since realizing I was auDHD via TikTok over the pandemic and then diving into research on the subject my life has changed so radically for the better (and no, I’m not professionally diagnosed - if you’re pissed about it read this article). Learning how my brain works and working to unmask and embrace my authentic self is the best thing I ever did.

Now that I’m almost 25, I know who I am and why I’m here. I exist to make the world better through art - both mine and other peoples’. I feel so much purpose when I’m writing and when I’m engaging with and helping other artists. These songs are my therapy, they make me better, and they’ve helped heal me to the point where I am finally able to give back to the world. Even if no one else connects to my music, it'll still be helping people. Self improvement is inherently unselfish because until you help yourself, you’ll never be able to help someone else.

Whether they share my identities or not, I hope that through my writing I can help all kinds of people better understand and accept themselves, their community, and the world around them.”

WELCOME TO STARRLUST
